Our History
"“In the fall of 1891 a group of enthusiastic girls (but it is unnecessary to say enthusiastic when I say they were Agnes Scott girls), ten in number, formed a Reading Circle..." - Agnes Scott Institute
Tracing its roots back to as early as 1891, The Aurora is Agnes Scott’s longest-running student publication, outdating even The Silhouette and The Profile. With a rich history and expansive collection of student works, our magazine seeks to promote student creativity and give staff members experience in the publishing and copy-editing fields. Currently, the magazine publishes once annually in the spring and celebrates with an April launch party.
The magazine was originally published under the name “The Mnemosynean" and was associated with multiple on-campus literary arts organizations including The Mnemosynean and The Propylaeon. The current name “The Aurora”, a title previously used by the school yearbook from 1987-1899, was adopted by both the magazine and organization in 1900. The inclusion of visual art in The Aurora began around the mid-to-late 20th century and has become a staple part of our submissions, oftentimes with selected pieces being used as covers for the annual editions. Historically, The Aurora has also accepted submissions from other Georgia college students; however, in its current state, our magazine seeks to be an Agnes Scott-centered publication.
